Chase, Amex, or Citi: Which Transferable Points Should Fund Your Golf Trip

All three transfer to real airline and hotel programs, but not to the same ones, and not at the same ratio. Here's how Chase Ultimate Rewards, Amex Membership Rewards, and Citi ThankYou actually compare for a golf trip.

Three card issuers run transferable-points programs built for exactly this kind of trip planning: a flight, a resort stay, and a tee time that isn't moving once it's booked. Chase Ultimate Rewards, American Express Membership Rewards, and Citi ThankYou Points all convert into real airline miles and hotel points instead of a fixed cash-back rate, but they don't transfer to the same partners, and a card that looks interchangeable with the other two on a rewards chart stops looking that way the moment American Airlines AAdvantage is the target.

The partner lists and ratios below come from our own Chase, Amex, and Citi breakdowns, each checked directly against the issuer's own transfer page, Chase and Amex as recently as September 19, 2026. Confirm the live roster and ratio on the issuer's own site before transferring regardless, since all three have changed a partner or a ratio at least once in 2026.

What each program is actually good at

Chase Ultimate Rewards is the generalist of the three. Its 14 partners split into 10 airlines and 4 hotel programs, Marriott Bonvoy, World of Hyatt, IHG One Rewards, and Wyndham Rewards, almost all at a straight 1:1 transfer. That's the only one of these three programs with real hotel and airline coverage in the same roster, which matters for a golf trip that needs to book both sides from one points balance. The one crack in Chase's 1:1 story is Hyatt: cardholders who applied for Sapphire Preferred or Ink Business Preferred on or after June 15, 2026 already transfer at 4:3 instead of 1:1, and every existing cardholder moves to that same rate on October 1, 2026.

American Express Membership Rewards does not reach AAdvantage at all, on any card, at any ratio, confirmed against Amex's own transfer page as of September 19, 2026. That single gap rules Membership Rewards out for any trip built around American's hub network specifically. Where it's strong: Hilton Honors carried an active 30% transfer bonus through October 14, 2026 per Amex's own promotion, turning 1,000 Membership Rewards points into 1,300 Hilton points during that window, and the hotel partner list grew to four as of the same September 19 check, adding The Leading Hotels of the World Leaders Club at 1,000 points to 250 Leaders Club points.

Citi ThankYou Points is the only one of the three that reaches AAdvantage, but the ratio depends on which ThankYou card earned the points: 1:1 for the Strata Elite, Strata Premier, or legacy Prestige card, and 1:0.7 for a no-annual-fee ThankYou card. That's not a small gap, 50,000 points move as 50,000 AAdvantage miles on the fee card and only 35,000 on the no-fee one. Citi's hotel side took a real hit on April 19, 2026: Choice Privileges dropped from 1,000 points earning 2,000 Choice points to 1,500, and Preferred Hotels & Resorts' I Prefer program was cut in half, from 1,000:4,000 to 1,000:2,000.

The one question that actually decides it

Does the trip need American Airlines specifically? If yes, Citi is the only program of the three that reaches AAdvantage, and the card matters as much as the program: a fee-bearing ThankYou card transfers at 1:1, a no-fee card at 1:0.7. Amex is off the table entirely for this trip regardless of which card you hold. Chase doesn't reach AAdvantage either, so if American is the only realistic airline into the destination, Citi wins by default, not by comparison.

If American isn't the requirement, the choice opens up. A trip needing both a flight and a hotel room from the same points balance favors Chase, since it's the only one of the three with meaningful coverage on both sides. A hotel-heavy trip, especially one that can land during Amex's Hilton bonus window, favors Membership Rewards. A flight-only trip on one of Chase's ten airline partners, Southwest among them, again favors Chase for the 1:1 simplicity.

Holding more than one of these cards is normal for anyone serious about points, and it's the actual answer for a trip that has both an AAdvantage-only flight and a Hilton-heavy hotel stay: Citi covers the flight, Amex covers the room, and neither program has to do a job it wasn't built for. The mistake is assuming one card's rewards should cover a whole trip when the partner lists don't overlap enough to make that true.

What to check before you transfer

Confirm the receiving program's current award price for the exact flight or room before transferring out of any of these three, since every transfer is one-way and none of these issuers will pull points back once they land. If Hyatt is part of a Chase-funded trip, confirm which side of the June 15 or October 1, 2026 ratio change the card falls on. If Hilton is part of an Amex-funded trip, confirm the 30% transfer bonus is still live before counting on it past October 14, 2026. And if AAdvantage is the target, confirm which Citi ThankYou card actually earned the points before assuming the better 1:1 ratio applies.

Quick answers

Which transferable-points program reaches American Airlines AAdvantage?
Citi ThankYou Points, at 1:1 for the Strata Elite, Strata Premier, or legacy Prestige card, or 1:0.7 for a no-annual-fee ThankYou card. American Express Membership Rewards has no AAdvantage transfer path at any ratio, on any card, as of its transfer page checked 2026-09-19. Chase Ultimate Rewards doesn't reach AAdvantage either; its airline partners are a different roster entirely.
Which program has the most airline and hotel transfer partners?
Chase Ultimate Rewards, at 14 total as of its July 2026 partner list: 10 airlines and 4 hotel programs, almost all at 1:1. The one exception is World of Hyatt, which dropped to a 4:3 ratio for cardholders who applied for Sapphire Preferred or Ink Business Preferred on or after June 15, 2026, and for existing cardholders starting October 1, 2026.
Does Amex Membership Rewards have any advantage over Chase or Citi?
Its Hilton Honors transfer carried an active 30% transfer bonus valid through October 14, 2026, per Amex's own promotion, checked 2026-09-19, meaning 1,000 Membership Rewards points landed as 1,300 Hilton points during that window. Membership Rewards also added a fourth hotel partner, The Leading Hotels of the World Leaders Club, at 1,000 points to 250 Leaders Club points, confirmed on the live transfer page the same day.
If a golf trip needs both a flight and a hotel, does one program cover both?
Chase is the only one of the three with both airline and hotel partners in its own 14-partner roster, including Southwest for the flight and Marriott, Hyatt, IHG, or Wyndham for the room. Amex and Citi both lean harder on one side: Amex's broader airline roster and hotel-bonus strength, Citi's AAdvantage-specific ratio advantage. Check which side of the trip, flight or room, actually needs the points before picking a program to concentrate spend on.
