American Express Membership Rewards Won't Get You to American. Here's What It's Actually Good For

Membership Rewards has no AAdvantage transfer path at all, at any ratio. For a golf trip built around American's hub network, that changes which currency should be doing the work.

Membership Rewards is the transferable-points currency most often recommended for golf trips in general. For a golf trip that starts at a hub American Airlines actually flies from, it's the wrong recommendation more often than the points blogs let on. American Airlines is not a Membership Rewards transfer partner. Not at a bad ratio, not with a fee attached: it simply isn't on the list, and it hasn't been for years.

That's not a knock on the program. It's a scope problem, and scoping a currency correctly before you earn a pile of it is the whole game.

What Membership Rewards actually transfers to

As of 2026-09-07, Membership Rewards has 16 active airline transfer partners, down from 17 after Etihad Guest's partnership ended June 30, 2026: Aer Lingus, Aeromexico, Air Canada Aeroplan, Air France/KLM Flying Blue, ANA, Avianca LifeMiles, British Airways, Cathay Pacific, Delta SkyMiles, Emirates Skywards, Iberia Avios, JetBlue TrueBlue, Qantas, Qatar Airways, Singapore KrisFlyer, and Virgin Atlantic Flying Club.

Most of those transfer at 1:1. The exceptions: Aeromexico runs 1:1.6, Cathay Pacific and Emirates both run 5:4, and JetBlue runs 1:0.8. Transfers to the two U.S. airline partners, Delta and JetBlue, carry a transfer fee of $0.0006 per point, capped at $99.

On the hotel side there are four partners, as of September 19, 2026: Choice Privileges and Marriott Bonvoy at 1:1, Hilton Honors at 1:2, and The Leading Hotels of the World Leaders Club at 1,000 Membership Rewards points for 250 Leaders Club points. Amex is currently running a 30% transfer bonus to Hilton, valid through October 14, 2026, which turns that 1:2 into 1:2.6 while the promotion runs. The gap that matters for a DFW-based trip

Fairways and Miles is based in Dallas-Fort Worth, American's largest hub, so a lot of the golf trips this site plans start on American metal. AAdvantage is the natural target currency for that traveler, and Membership Rewards simply does not reach it. Citi ThankYou Points do, at 1:1 or 1:0.7 depending on which card earned them, which makes Citi the more direct route to American's own miles for anyone weighing the two currencies side by side.

That doesn't make Membership Rewards useless for an American-based golfer. It makes it a different tool: a hotel-and-partner-airline currency rather than an AAdvantage-feeder one. Delta SkyMiles, Air France/KLM, British Airways, and the four hotel partners are all real options for the parts of a golf trip that don't run through American's own metal, especially the lodging leg, where Hilton and Marriott both have real golf-resort footprints.

Where it actually earns its keep

The lodging leg. A golf trip usually spends its points budget on the flight and pays cash for the hotel, which is backwards if the hotel-loyalty math is better than the flight math that week. Membership Rewards reaching both Hilton and Marriott at reasonable ratios (better than reasonable at Hilton through October 14, 2026) means it can cover the room even when it can't cover the flight to American's own network.

International golf, off American's home turf. British Airways Avios, Air France/KLM Flying Blue, and Cathay Pacific are all live options for getting to a links trip in the UK or Ireland, or a longer-haul destination, without touching AAdvantage at all. If the trip isn't originating or terminating on American metal, the AAdvantage gap stops mattering.

Delta, specifically. Delta SkyMiles has no published award chart and prices dynamically, but it's a real partner at 1:1, and for a golfer who splits loyalty between American and Delta depending on the route, Membership Rewards is a legitimate bridge currency between the two.

The rule

Don't earn Membership Rewards assuming it will eventually become AAdvantage miles. It won't, on any card, at any ratio, and the gap has held for years with no sign of Amex adding American as a partner. If American is the airline the trip is actually flying, price the flight in Citi ThankYou or AAdvantage-earning cards directly. Save Membership Rewards for the hotel leg, for partner airlines outside American's network, and for the live transfer bonuses Amex runs on Hilton and Marriott, which is where this currency has genuinely useful, and current, value.

Quick answers

Can I transfer American Express Membership Rewards points to American Airlines AAdvantage?
No. American Airlines is not a Membership Rewards transfer partner at any ratio, on any Amex card. If AAdvantage miles are the goal, Membership Rewards is not the currency to earn.
How many airline transfer partners does Membership Rewards have?
16 active airline partners as of 2026-09-07, after Etihad Guest's partnership ended June 30, 2026. Most transfer at 1:1; a few transfer at better or worse ratios, so check the specific partner before assuming parity.
What's the Membership Rewards transfer ratio to Hilton Honors?
The standard ratio is 1:2 (1,000 Membership Rewards points become 2,000 Hilton Honors points). Amex is running a 30% transfer bonus through October 14, 2026, which pushes that to 1:2.6 while it lasts.
