Citi ThankYou Points: The Card You Hold Decides the American Airlines Transfer Ratio
Citi ThankYou Points transfer to American Airlines AAdvantage at 1:1 or 1:0.7 depending on which card earned them, and two hotel transfer ratios just got worse. Both facts change the math on a golf trip.
Citi ThankYou Points transfer to American Airlines AAdvantage. That much has been true since Citi and American restored the partnership. What most summaries leave out: the ratio depends on which ThankYou card earned the points, not on the points themselves, and it isn't a small gap.
The ratio is a function of the card, not the currency
Hold the Citi Strata Elite, Citi Strata Premier, or the legacy Citi Prestige (closed to new applicants), and ThankYou Points transfer to AAdvantage at 1:1. Hold a no-annual-fee ThankYou card instead, and the same points transfer at 1:0.7. Move 50,000 points from a Strata Premier and AAdvantage credits 50,000 miles. Move the same 50,000 points from a no-fee card and AAdvantage credits 35,000.
That's a 30% haircut for holding the wrong card, on the same loyalty currency, transferred to the same airline, on the same day. For a golf trip priced in AAdvantage miles, the Strata Premier's $95 annual fee, current as of 2026-08-24, pays for itself the moment a single transfer crosses five figures.
Two hotel transfers got worse on April 19, 2026
Citi cut transfer ratios to two hotel programs, effective April 19, 2026, for ThankYou cards that carry an annual fee:
| Partner | Old ratio (1,000 Citi points →) | New ratio (1,000 Citi points →) | Change |
|---|---|---|---|
| Choice Privileges | 2,000 points | 1,500 points | -25% |
| Preferred Hotels & Resorts, I Prefer | 4,000 points | 2,000 points | -50% |
Neither program is a marquee golf-resort chain, but both get used as a budget lodging leg on a golf trip that's spending most of its points budget on the flight. A points balance built before April 19, 2026 and left sitting doesn't lose value on its own; the devaluation only bites at the moment of transfer, so a balance earned under the old ratio is worth transferring before further cuts, not after.
Where this leaves a DFW-based golf trip
American is the default airline out of Fairways and Miles' home hub, so the Citi-to-AAdvantage path matters more here than a generic transfer-partner roundup would suggest. It's also worth knowing what Citi ThankYou can do that a more common transferable-points currency can't: American Express Membership Rewards has no AAdvantage transfer path at all, at any ratio, on any card. Citi ThankYou is the more direct route to American's own miles for anyone holding that currency instead, provided the card earning it carries the annual fee that unlocks the full ratio.
The rule
Check which ThankYou card actually earned the points before assuming the transfer prices at 1:1. If it's a no-fee card, price the trip both ways: 1:0.7 to AAdvantage, or a same-value transfer to a partner that doesn't tier by card. And treat the live partner list and every ratio in this piece as a same-day check before transferring; Citi has changed both once in the last several months and there's no reason to assume it's finished.

More transfer-partner strategy lives under /points, the destinations worth spending those miles on are under /golf, and the 19th Hole newsletter is where ratio changes like the April 2026 cut get covered as they happen.
Quick answers
- Does Citi ThankYou's AAdvantage transfer ratio depend on which card I hold?
- Yes. Hold the Citi Strata Elite, Strata Premier, or the legacy Prestige card and ThankYou Points transfer to AAdvantage at 1:1. Hold a no-annual-fee ThankYou card instead and the same points transfer at 1:0.7. Moving 50,000 points from a Strata Premier credits 50,000 AAdvantage miles; the same 50,000 points from a no-fee card credits only 35,000.
- How much did Citi ThankYou's hotel transfer ratios change on April 19, 2026?
- Two programs got cut, effective that date, for ThankYou cards carrying an annual fee. Choice Privileges dropped from 1,000 points earning 2,000 Choice points to earning 1,500, a 25% reduction. Preferred Hotels & Resorts' I Prefer program dropped from 1,000 points earning 4,000 to earning 2,000, a 50% reduction.
- Can American Express Membership Rewards transfer to AAdvantage?
- No. Membership Rewards has no AAdvantage transfer path at all, at any ratio, on any card. That gap makes Citi ThankYou the more direct route to American's own miles for anyone holding that currency instead, provided the ThankYou card earning it carries the annual fee that unlocks the full 1:1 ratio.
- Is the Citi Strata Premier's annual fee worth it for AAdvantage transfers?
- Yes, for a golf trip priced in AAdvantage miles: the Strata Premier's $95 annual fee, current as of August 24, 2026, unlocks the full 1:1 transfer ratio instead of a no-fee ThankYou card's 1:0.7, and pays for itself the moment a single transfer crosses five figures.
