Marriott's Stay for 5 vs. Hilton's 5th Night Free: Which Golf-Trip Discount Is Actually Easier to Use
Both programs give you a free night on a longer points stay. One hands it to every member automatically. The other gates it behind elite status you might not have yet. Here's how the two benefits actually differ for a golf trip.
Both Marriott Bonvoy and Hilton Honors reward a longer points stay with a free night, and a golf trip is exactly the kind of stay that qualifies: five or six nights built around a course rather than a single overnight stopover. The two benefits look similar from a distance. They aren't. One of them is available to every member from the moment they join. The other needs elite status a lot of golfers booking their first points trip simply don't have yet.
Marriott's Stay for 5, Pay for 4: no status required
Marriott's 5th-night-free rule, officially called Stay for 5, Pay for 4, works the same way for every Bonvoy member regardless of tier: book five consecutive nights on points, in a single reservation, and the cheapest of those five nights comes off the bill automatically. No promo code, no separate redemption step, no status requirement. It scales with the length of the stay: a 10-night points booking gets two free nights, the two lowest-cost nights in that stretch, a 15-night booking gets three.
Two conditions still apply. The reservation has to be entirely on points, so a Points and Money booking or a package rate doesn't qualify, and the nights have to be consecutive under one reservation rather than split across separate bookings at the same hotel.
Hilton's 5th-night-free: real, but gated
Hilton Honors runs a version of the same idea, but it isn't open to every member. Silver, Gold, Diamond, and Diamond Reserve elite members get every 5th night free on a Standard Room Reward stay of five or more consecutive nights, booked entirely in points, up to four free nights on a 20-night stay: nights 5, 10, 15, and 20 come off the bill. A member with no elite status gets none of this on a first points redemption, even on an otherwise-qualifying five-night stay. The same exclusions apply as Marriott's: no Points & Money bookings, no package or promotion rates, and decline the free night or check out early and it's forfeited with no cash or points value paid instead.
The difference that actually matters: which night is free
The two benefits don't even work the same way once you qualify. Marriott frees the cheapest night in each five-night block, whichever night that turns out to be once the stay is priced. Hilton frees specific nights by position instead: the 5th, 10th, 15th, and 20th nights of the stay, whatever those particular nights happen to cost. Neither program guarantees you the most expensive night in the stretch for free, which would be the better deal in dollar terms; Marriott guarantees you the least expensive one, and Hilton hands you whichever night lands on that position in the calendar.

Which one actually helps your golf trip
If you're booking your first points stay and haven't earned status in either program, the comparison isn't close: Marriott hands you Stay for 5, Pay for 4 regardless, and Hilton hands you nothing until you've earned Silver or bought your way there through a co-branded card. For a golfer planning a five-night trip around JW Marriott San Antonio Hill Country, attached to TPC San Antonio, or The Ritz-Carlton Maui, Kapalua, a Bonvoy account with zero history still gets the discount on the first booking.
If you already hold Hilton Silver or higher, the calculus changes. The benefit stacks on top of status you've already earned, and it applies at any Hilton-family golf resort with a Standard Room Reward on the calendar, including Waldorf Astoria Orlando, La Quinta Resort & Club, or Boulders Resort & Spa in Scottsdale. There's no reason to route a trip through Marriott instead just because its version needs no status, when you already cleared Hilton's gate.
Neither program publishes a fixed chart to check months out. Both moved to fully dynamic pricing, Marriott in 2022 and Hilton in 2017, which means the points value of either free night rides the room's own cash rate on the dates you actually book, not a number you can bank on from an old figure. World of Hyatt is the one major program still running a fixed category chart if a locked-in number matters more to your group than either of these longer-stay discounts; see fixed chart or dynamic price for that side of the decision.
What to confirm before you book
Both programs' terms have moved before and can move again. The Marriott figures above are current as of September 14, 2026; the Hilton figures as of August 17, 2026. Reconfirm the current status requirement and the five-consecutive-night, all-points structure on each program's own site before you build a trip's budget around either discount, and price the actual dates rather than banking on an older figure.

Quick answers
- Do you need elite status to get Marriott's Stay for 5, Pay for 4 discount?
- No. Every Bonvoy member gets it at every tier: book five consecutive nights entirely on points in one reservation and the cheapest of those five nights is free. That's the opposite of Hilton Honors, where the equivalent benefit is gated behind Silver status or higher.
- Do you need elite status to get Hilton's 5th-night-free discount?
- Yes. Only Silver, Gold, Diamond, and Diamond Reserve Hilton Honors members qualify. A brand-new member with no elite status gets nothing from this benefit on a first points redemption, even on an otherwise-qualifying five-night stay.
- Which nights actually come free under each program?
- They work differently. Marriott frees the cheapest of the nights in each five-night block, whichever night that turns out to be. Hilton frees specific nights by position, the 5th, 10th, 15th, and 20th night of the stay, regardless of which of those nights costs the most or least.
- Do either Marriott or Hilton publish a fixed award chart for golf-resort stays?
- No. Both moved to fully dynamic pricing, Marriott in 2022 and Hilton in 2017, so the points cost of any given night tracks that night's own cash rate rather than a published category. World of Hyatt is the exception among major hotel programs still running a fixed chart.
