Planning Your First Hilton Head Golf Trip Around Harbour Town and Sea Pines

Build a first Hilton Head golf trip around Sea Pines Resort, not the island at large. Sea Pines owns three courses worth the trip on their own, one of which, Harbour Town Golf Links, hosts a PGA Tour event every April. Play those three first. Everything else on Hilton Head is a second trip.

The three Sea Pines courses

The three courses do not share a design pedigree, so playing all three gives you three distinct rounds rather than three versions of the same golf course.

Harbour Town is the one to plan around. It closed for a ground-up restoration in 2025, rebuilding every green and bunker while keeping Dye's original character, and reopened that November. The course you play today is a genuinely refreshed version of the one Tour players see.

One practical consequence of that tournament: April is when Harbour Town is busiest and hardest to book. If your dates are flexible, avoid the tournament window entirely and you will find both better availability and calmer rates.

What it actually costs

Rates move with demand and time of day, so treat the table below as a snapshot rather than a price list. These are the live rates the booking portal showed for July 30, 2026, two golfers, checked that morning.

Two things worth noticing.

Harbour Town does not discount its afternoons. It held $378 in both windows while Heron Point dropped from $240 to $147 after midday. If you are pricing a three-course trip, the shape of the bill is one premium round plus two that are negotiable, not three rounds at a resort average.

A $147 Heron Point afternoon is the cheapest real Pete Dye round on the property. For a first trip on a budget, that is the tee time to build around, and it makes a three-course weekend meaningfully cheaper than three morning rounds would suggest.

The rate that is not on the website

The booking portal carries a notice that is easy to scroll past and worth more than any number above it: resort lodging guests get preferred golf rates that are not reflected in online tee-time pricing. To get them you have to call the resort, at (866) 561-8802 as listed on the booking page.

So if you are staying inside the gates, the prices you see online are not the prices available to you. Price the lodging and the golf together on the phone before you book either separately.

The wider island

Sea Pines is the anchor, not the whole island. The Lowcountry has a couple dozen more courses across Hilton Head, Bluffton, and Daufuskie, including other Dye and Nicklaus designs outside the Sea Pines gates. That is real depth for a return trip.

For a first trip, the math is simpler than it looks: three courses inside one gate beats a rental-car circuit of the wider island, especially on a long weekend where an hour of driving is an hour you are not playing.

Getting there from DFW

Fairways and Miles is based in Dallas-Fort Worth, American Airlines' largest hub, so that is the lens here, stated as a bias rather than the only way in.

Two airports serve Hilton Head. Savannah/Hilton Head International (SAV) is the bigger field, close to an hour's drive from Sea Pines, and it carries American service. Hilton Head Island Airport (HHH) sits on the island itself, a much shorter drive to the gate, with year-round American flights to Charlotte plus seasonal service from other carriers.

For an AAdvantage traveler the default is a DFW or Charlotte routing into either field. Cross-shop them: HHH saves you most of the drive, SAV usually has more schedule to work with, and award pricing between the two can differ enough on a given day to be worth five minutes on aa.com before you commit.

The wrap

Book Sea Pines, call the resort rather than trusting the online rate if you are staying on property, and play Harbour Town, Heron Point, and Atlantic Dunes in whatever order the tee sheet allows. Take the Heron Point afternoon if the budget is tight. Fly into whichever of SAV or HHH gives you the better American connection, avoid April unless you want tournament week, and treat the rest of the Lowcountry as the reason to come back.
