DFW's Golf Range: Fort Worth's City Munis to PGA Frisco's Major-Championship Build-Out

Fairways and Miles is based in Dallas-Fort Worth, and DFW is not a golf destination. Say it with love: this is a market people fly out of to play golf, not into. But home turf is still home turf, and DFW's own golf scene runs from one extreme to the other — a city-run municipal system charging city rates, to a resort campus built to host the PGA of America and a major championship.

The muni end: City of Fort Worth Golf

The City of Fort Worth runs its own golf system directly, per the city's official golf site. Meadowbrook, Pecan Valley, and Rockwood Park anchor the muni lineup, alongside an annual pass program for regulars. This is public golf in the plainest sense: city-set rates, city-run tee sheets, no resort markup sitting on top.

One caution the city's own site makes necessary: individual courses get temporary closures and status notices posted directly on that system (a bridge closure affecting Pecan Valley's River Course has shown up there before). Which specific Fort Worth muni is actually playable on a given weekend is exactly the kind of detail that needs a live check of the city's status page, not a description cached in an article. That caveat holds for any muni system, and Fort Worth's is no exception.

The other end: PGA Frisco

Thirty minutes north, Omni PGA Frisco Resort sits at the opposite end of DFW's golf spectrum entirely. The Fields Ranch campus carries two full 18-hole courses: Fields Ranch East, designed by Gil Hanse, and Fields Ranch West, designed by Beau Welling, built as the PGA of America's own headquarters campus, per the resort's official site. The PGA Championship is confirmed to return to Fields Ranch East in 2027, making PGA Frisco one of DFW's only home-turf claims to a genuine major-championship venue.

Public access at PGA Frisco skews resort-guest-oriented rather than muni-style walk-up, and same-day and public tee-sheet rules are the kind of detail that shifts by season. That's worth confirming on the resort's own golf subpage at the time of booking, rather than assuming public access there works the same way it does at a city course.

What this actually means for a DFW golfer

Two ends, one metro area: a city system built for cheap, regular rounds close to home, and a resort campus built to host the PGA of America's own championship. Most DFW golfers use both, for different reasons — the muni system for a Tuesday-afternoon nine, PGA Frisco for the trip that doesn't need a plane ticket.
